Pre And Post Op Instructions For Our Patients

In order for you to get the most out of your varicose vein and spider vein treatments, you will need to follow a couple of pre and post-operation instructions. Below are some of the ways that you can prepare for vein treatment and what you can do after your treatment:

Pre-Op Instructions

Make sure that you inform your doctor of your health history and any medications that you are taking. Wear loose clothing to your appointment and bring 2 pairs of support hose. Avoid the use of shaving, lotions or creams the day of surgery.

Post-Op Instruction

The post-op instructions are very similar for all vein treatments, with one of the most important being to walk for approximately 30 mins each day. If you are receiving sclerotherapy, then you will need to avoid taking a hot bath, shower or using a sauna for two to three weeks after your procedure. You should also avoid taking any type of anti-inflammatory medication, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. If you experience some discomfort after your surgery, then you will be able to take Tylenol. You will need to wear support hose for three weeks.

If you are getting ambulatory plebectomy, then you will need to apply ice to the infected area for 15 to 20 minutes before going to bed. You will need to walk for 30 minutes per day, but avoid doing heavy aerobics for at least three weeks. You can take anti-inflammatory medications, but you should contact your doctor if you are still experiencing pain after two or three days. Support hose will need to be worn for three weeks, and they will need to be replaced after two days.

It is important for you to have someone drive you home after getting this procedure. You will have to wear support hose for three weeks after this procedure. Heavy activity will need to be avoided for three weeks. You should also avoid soaking in a tub or pool until all wounds are completely healed- usually about one week.
